Media Release: WSCC launches online Young Worker Safety Certificate Course to celebrate Safety & Health Week 2022

29th Apr 2022

Yellowknife, NT (April 29, 2022) – The Workers’ Safety & Compensation Commission (WSCC) is pleased to mark Safety and Health Week 2022 by highlighting workplace safety for new and young workers and officially launching an online Young Worker Safety Certificate Course.

Safety & Health Week is an event celebrated from May 1-7 across North America that emphasizes the importance of preventing injury and illness in the workplace and communities.

WSCC’s safety team will be visiting schools and employers across the Northwest Territories throughout the week to share the course which is designed to prepare new and young workers to safely enter the workforce. WSCC will also be hosting industry-specific Zoom sessions for employers who frequently hire young workers.

“Workers under the age of 25 are often at a greater risk for workplace injuries. It is vital to make sure they have the basic knowledge they need to start their working lives safely,” said Debbie Molloy, WSCC President and CEO.

“Safety and Health Week is an excellent opportunity to highlight WSCC’s young worker safety resources. The Young Worker Safety Course is interactive, can be completed in two hours, and learners will receive an online certificate that is a great addition to any résumé. We encourage all employers of younger workers to include it in their health and safety orientation training. There is also useful material available to help parents, teachers, instructors and anyone working with youth to help them prepare for their first job.”

WSCC developed the certificate course in collaboration with the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS).
